Habitat

Dry, usually rocky, open woodlands, barrens, and outcrops on mafic and calcareous rocks of the mountains and inner Piedmont; dry clearings and roadsides. Infrequent to locally common in the Virginia Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains; rare in the Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

Provides excellent cover year-round. Seeds are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. Attracts butterflies
