Habitat: Floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, moist to wet meadows, old fields, clearings, and other disturbed, open or shaded sites. Common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; frequent at low elevations in the mountains.
Wildlife Value: The nectar-rich flowers are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators, including Monarchs. Birds enjoy the seeds.
Notes: Very tough. Enthusiastic spreader sideways and with self-seeding, so be careful about location, not easy to remove
