Habitat

In a range of mostly natural habitats, including floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, wet flatwoods, seepage swamps, bogs, maritime swamps, depression swamps and ponds, maritime forests, mesic upland forests, and moist to wet clearings. Common in the Virginia Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont; infrequent in the inner Piedmont; very rare in the mountains

Wildlife value

Larval host plant for Northern Pearly-Eye (Lethe anthedon) larvae. Highly resistant to deer. Also a larval host plant to several skipper butterflies. Small mammals and birds are attracted to the seeds
