Habitat

Alluvial swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, tidal swamps, maritime swamps, mucky hollows of seepage swamps, wet flatwoods, freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, semipermanently inundated rocky bars and shores, old beaver ponds, and other impoundments; most characteristic of shaded, shallowly seasonally flooded soils. Common in the Virginia Coastal Plain; frequent in the Piedmont; rare in the mountains; often forms large colonies

Wildlife value

Provides cover and foraging ground for aquatic birds, waterfowl (including wood ducks), and pollinators

High Value Generalist
Earth Sangha lists this plant as a "High Value Generalist" because it is easy to grow, occurs across a wide range of habitats and is known to be of high value to wildlife
