Habitat

Mesic to dry, acidic forests, bogs, swamps, and rocky stream bottoms; restricted to isolated, north-facing bluffs in the Virginia Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Most abundant in the acidic cove forests of southwestern Virginia, where it often forms nearly impenetrable stands many hectares in extent. Common in the southern half of the mountains, infrequent to locally common in the northern half; common in the southwestern Piedmont foothills; rare elsewhere in the Piedmont and in the n. Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

It proves winter and extreme weather coverage.  Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees are attracted to its blooms for nectar.  Members of the genus Rhododendron support the following specialized bee: Andrena (Andrena) cornelli
