Habitat

Dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, barrens, old fields, fencerows, and sandy soils of the Coastal Plain. Common throughout Virginia except at higher elevations in the mountains

Wildlife value

Provides winter cover. This plant supports Juniper Hairstreak (Callophrys gryneus) and imperial moth (Eacles imperialis) larvae. Songbirds and small mammals eat the cones
