
Habitat: Floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, riverbanks, flood-scoured stream shores and bars, seepage swamps, fens, depression swamps, wet meadows, low pastures, and ditches; most characteristic of moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Frequent to common throughout.
Wildlife value: Flowers are attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Particularly popular with the non-native honeybees. It supports Pearl Crescent larvae. Songbirds eat the seeds.
Notes: Its great height makes it a dramatic accent in the back of a garden.
