Habitat: Woodlands, old fields, and clearings; typically but not always in calcareous soils. Frequent in the Piedmont and northern and central Ridge and Valley province; rare elsewhere in Virginia
Wildlife Value: It attracts various pollinators and is a larval host plant for Three-lined flower moth (Schinia trifascia) . Dead stems are used by stem-nesting bees.
