Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and woodlands; usually in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the Virginia Piedmont and lower mountains (except southwestern Virginia); infrequent in the inner Coastal Plain; rare in the outer Coastal Plain
Wildlife Value: Its flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. The seeds are eaten by songbirds.
