Habitat

Floodplain forests, mesic slope forests, boulder field forests, and rock outcrops; usually on mafic or calcareous rocks and soils, or in nutrient-rich alluvium. Frequent in the Virginia mountains (low elevations only) and Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

Bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects enjoy the nectar from the flowers. Small mammals browse the foliage
