Habitat

Dry old fields and forests, rocky woodlands and barrens, cliffs, and outcrop pavements. In most areas, this is an early-successional species that invades open habitats and is quickly replaced by hardwoods. Common in the Virginia Piedmont and at low elevations in the mountains; frequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

This plant supports Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis). Seeds are eaten by birds. This tree is resistant to damage by deer

High Value Generalist
Earth Sangha lists this plant as a "High Value Generalist" because it is easy to grow, occurs across a wide range of habitats and is known to be of high value to wildlife
