Habitat: Freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, swamps (all types), bogs, sea-level fens, wet flatwoods, and interdune swales. Frequent in the Virginia s. and c. Coastal Plain. Native to a few Piedmont areas including Fairfax and Arlington Counties
Wildlife Value: Host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly. Flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. Songbirds and small mammals eat the seeds. Members of the genus Symphyotrichum support specialized bees
