Habitat: Alluvial swamps, floodplain oxbow ponds, wet clay flatwoods and clearings, ditches, sandy-silty river shores, and drawn-down impoundments. Frequent to locally common in the Virginia southern and central Coastal Plain and outer southern Piedmont; infrequent to rare elsewhere in these provinces.
Wildlife Value: Attracts bees, wasps, and butterflies. Buckeyes, Monarchs and Swallowtail butterflies flock to the blooms
