Habitat

Mesic to dry forests and woodlands, barrens, outcrops, clearings, peaty swales, ditches, fields, and roadsides. Frequent to common throughout, but apparently absent from far southwestern Virginia

Wildlife value

Hummingbirds nectar at the flowers and songbirds eat the seeds. Members of the genus Oenothera support specialized bees
