Habitat: Mesic to dry forests, woodlands, and clearings; tolerant of a range of soil chemistries but perhaps more characteristic of acidic, nutrient-poor substrates. Common in the Virginia mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain
