Habitat: Dry (rarely to dry-mesic) forests and woodlands, shale barrens, and thin soils around rock outcrops; occurs on a wide range of soil and rock types. Common in the Virginia mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the inner Coastal Plain; rare in the outer Coastal Plain
