Additional Info

Habitat: Moist to dry, rich forests, boulder fields, Coastal Plain shell-marl ravines; most numerous in soils weathered from calcareous or mafic substrates. Frequent in the Virginia mountains; infrequent in the inner Piedmont; rare in the outer Piedmont and Coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Long-tongued bees are the primary pollinators, including bumblebees and leaf-cutting bees (Megachilidae). Other pollinators are Halictid bees, butterflies, and skippers. These insects seek nectar, and some of the bees collect pollen from the anthers. It also attracts hummingbirds.
