Habitat: Well-drained alluvial forests, mesic to dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, barrens, and clearings, especially over calcareous or mafic rocks. Frequent in the Virginia mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Wasps, butterflies, birds, small bees, moths and flies are attracted to the flowers.
