Additional Info

Habitat: Mesic to dry forests, rocky woodlands, and clearings; typically, but not exclusively, on calcareous or mafic substrates. Frequent in the Virginia mountains and inner and northern Piedmont; infrequent elsewhere in the Piedmont.

Wildlife Value: Bees and flies are attracted by the plants' nectar. This plant supports Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) larvae. Adult Black Swallowtail butterflies feed on flower nectar from thistles, milkweed and red clover.
