Habitat

Mesic to rather dry upland forests; occasionally in well-drained floodplain forests. Common in the Virginia mountains and Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain

Wildlife value

This plant supports Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes). Adult Black Swallowtail butterflies feed on flower nectar from thistles, milkweed and red clover
