Habitat

Mesic and dry-mesic upland forests, well-drained floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, seepage swamps, wet flatwoods, and various shaded, disturbed habitats. Common throughout Virginia

Wildlife value

Along streams and lakes, the seeds are eaten by ducks, small birds, and small mammals. The submerged parts provide a habitat for micro and macro invertebrates
