Habitat: Dry-mesic to dry, open forests, woodlands, barrens, and clearings; mostly on acidic to moderately basic soils. Frequent in the mountains (except sw. Virginia) and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Attracts bees, wasps, and beetles.
