Habitat: Dune grasslands and scrub, interdune swales and ponds, bogs, depression ponds, wet to fairly dry clearings, ditches, old fields, and roadsides. Common in the Virginia Coastal Plain; infrequent in the outer Piedmont

Wildlife Value: Attracts bees and butterflies. Bees suck nectar or collect pollen. A special value for native bees. Birds eat the seeds
