Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and woodlands. Common in the Virginia mountains; infrequent in the inner and northern Piedmont

Wildlife Value: Flowers are attractive to butterflies. Gamebirds eat seeds. Seeds also provide a late-season food source to fuel migrating and resident birds into the fall and winter
