In varied dry-mesic to dry forests, woodlands, barrens, outcrops, clearings, fields, and other disturbed habitats; also occasionally in seasonally dry depression ponds, clay-soil flatwoods, and other alternately wet and droughty habitats. Although its full distribution has not yet been mapped, var. fasciculatum appears to be frequent to common throughout the state, likely in every county.
